Mount Cashel Kennels offers some of the best and latest facilities to breeders.
We can swab bitches, grow our own cultures and in 24 hours determine if they
have an infection. We also conduct a sensitivity test at the same time, so
as to know the correct antibiotic to administer, if necessary to your bitch.
Ideally, this would be done within the first week of the bitch coming into
season. Once the
bitch is near her mating date, we start blood testing her using the VETLAB
(visit the Vetlab website) ovulation
blood kit. This highly accurate test determines the correct time for mating,
measuring levels of progesterone in the bitch’s blood. When a bitch ovulates,
she produces a level in or in excess of 8ng/ml of progesterone, and this is
the optimum time for mating. This system is of great help to “problem bitches”,
as in the last year we have put bitches in pup that have been mated at 9 days
and another at 26 days.
All
matings are conducted using the A.I. procedure, (In January 1999, I completed
an extensive training course in Artificial Insemination, Culture and Sensitivity
Testing, Blood Testing and Frozen Semen Preservation at Camelot Farms in Texas,
U.S.A., under the guidance of Sharyn Conole), where fresh semen is collected
from the dog, evaluated and inseminated straight into the bitch. This procedure
eliminates the risk of cross infection, is much easier on a maiden or nervous
and difficult bitch as well being easier on the stud dog, we are also able
to monitor his performance. Also you are assured of the dog you have booked
and won’t be disappointed by a refusal.
All visiting
bitches are kennelled in the American style crate system. We find this best,
as bitches settle a lot quicker, as 
they
don’t have the room to jump up and down and lie down straight away, and don’t
spend hours walking up and down the kennel. They have daily access to our
large, secure paddocks. Bitches are kennelled free of charge whilst here and
also the swabbing and blood testing is free, although there may be a charge
for the treatment of a bitch should she need any special veterinary attention.
Even though every care and attention is afforded your bitch during her stay,
in the unlikely event of an accident occurring, we will not be held responsible.
It is only on these conditions that bitches are accepted.
We can arrange return
transport for your bitch from anywhere in the UK or Ireland using all the
leading specialist Greyhound Transporters to ensure your bitch arrives and
is returned safely to you.
Many of Ireland’s Top Breeders like Dessie “Farloe” Loughrey, Lizzie “Minnies” Maher, Hugh “Quare” Maguire, Michael “Burnpark” Browne etc., etc. have visited our kennels in the past year.
